Georgetown University Hospital (GUH) is no stranger to receiving awards for their breastfeeding-friendliness. Honored by DCBFC for being the most breastfeeding-friendly maternity facility in the District in 2008 and 2009, GUH is making strides to become the first facility in the DC area to receive the coveted Baby Friendly Hospital designation that recognizes high quality lactation support provided to patients. Thus it was no surprise for Dr. Long to return to GUH to present the hospital with a Gold Breastfeeding-Friendly Workplace Award. “To me, it’s a no-brainer. When employees feel supported in their decision to breastfeed, they will in turn provide support to the families they care for while working,” said Dr. Long during the presentation. The hospital’s multi-user lactation room is an integral part of the Lactation Center that is overseen by their Lactation Services Department. With international board-certified lactation consultants (IBCLC) available seven days a week, the center provides full-service breastfeeding support that includes counseling, education, evidenced-based clinical management, an outpatient clinic as well as the sale and rental of breastfeeding equipment. The Lactation Center is available to all breastfeeding mothers, including employees and their spouses.
