• Shady Grove Adventist Hospital – Rockville, MD

    Employer’s Perspective:

At Shady Grove Adventist Hospital we do 5000 deliveries a year and are strong advocates for breastfeeding. While rounding on patients we heard over and over again the challenges these new mothers were having trying to continue breastfeeding when returning to work. These discussions made us look long and hard at how we, as a health care facility, are supporting our own employees. As our mission states, .we demonstrate God’s care by improving the health of people and communities through a ministry of physical, mental and spiritual healing.” First and foremost, we must support our own employees as they try to do what is best for their own infant. Our team developed an employee breastfeeding policy, found a space and designed an employee lactation room that accommodates three mothers at the same time. We named it the “New Moms’ Room” and opened it the beginning of 2012. This room is located in the center of the hospital and has been a very busy place for many new mothers all over the hospital.

    Employee’s Reaction:

I am a new employee at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. As I have a four month old daughter, I was thrilled to find that the hospital had a lactation room where I could pump every few hours as I needed to for Lucy. She is my third child and as a certified lactation consultant I am a very committed breastfeeding mom. This room is new, beautifully decorated, and I am finding it a true blessing. I have met several other moms in the New Moms’ Room and they are also very happy to have such a wonderful place to pump. Thank you Shady Grove!
